Is this course only for beginners?

Not at all! While this is a fundamentals course and is absolutely suitable for beginners, it can also help more experienced players strengthen or rebuild a foundation they may never have had the opportunity to fully develop—or may simply have forgotten over the years.

There are incredible musicians who have played for decades but never learned to read music, studied theory, mastered their scales, or developed a strong understanding of chords and inversions. You’re never too far along to go back and strengthen your fundamentals.

Is this course right for a complete beginner?

Absolutely! The course starts from the very beginning and builds from there. We’ll begin with things like posture, hand position, finger numbering, and basic technique before moving into scales, chords, inversions, rhythm, pedaling, 7th chords, reading music, and much more.

If you’re brand new to the piano, simply start at the beginning and work your way through the course at your own pace.

I already have some piano experience. Will this be too basic for me?

Not at all. Some of the early lessons may be familiar, and you’re welcome to move through those sections more quickly. But even experienced players often discover gaps in their foundation—maybe they know chords but struggle with inversions, are comfortable in a few keys but not all 12, or have never really understood how to read a lead sheet.

As the course progresses, we’ll take those fundamentals and put them to practical use with chord inversions, left-hand patterns, slash chords, rhythmic variations, arpeggios, suspended chords, 7th chords and more.

Do I need to know how to read sheet music?

No! You can work through the course even if you don’t read music at all. Throughout the lessons, I use an overhead view of the piano along with on-screen note names, light-up keys and verbal cues so you can clearly see what I’m playing.

If learning to read music is one of your goals, the course also includes an entire section devoted to it, covering chord charts, rhythm, lead sheets, the grand staff, rests, dynamics and more.

Am I too old to learn piano?

Absolutely not! I’ve taught adult students of all ages and experience levels over the years, and there is no age at which you suddenly become “too old” to learn music. In fact, students age 65+ make up the largest group of students I teach!

You don’t need to have started as a child or have aspirations of becoming a professional pianist. If you want to understand the piano better, learn songs more easily and become a more confident musician, you can start right where you are.
